La storia

La famiglia Cardini è originaria del Molino di Ripa (il gruppo di case che dal porto arrivano fino al Rio Borgo Pariani)
Cardini Carlo, nato a Baveno il 28.09.1831, sposò Margherita Tondina, nata a Gignese il 09.11.1838 ;
andarono ad abitare nella casa di famiglia, che si trova dietro alla Birreria Marescialla.
Ebbero 4 figli tra cui Cardini Stefano, nato a Baveno il 24.01.1875.
Stefano, di professione scalpellino per la cava Cirla, girò il mondo (Egitto, Francia, Romania, Australia, Argentina, Stati Uniti) fino al 1906, quando sposò, in data 08.10.1906, Maria Diverio, nata a Stresa il 07.10.1883.
Maria si era trasferita al Molino di Ripa con la sua famiglia in quanto suo Padre, Gaetano Diverio, era un falegname (il tavolo usato come buffet per le colazioni è una sua creazione) ed aveva il suo laboratorio nella casa che ora è la dependance della villa Borella / Mascarini.
Maria Diverio prima di sposarsi lavorava allo Chalet delle Rose, di proprietà della Vedova Henfrey, il cui marito aveva costruito la Villa Clara (ora Villa Branca) che alla sua morte lei vendette ai Conti Branca, ritirandosi nello Chalet, dove aprì una farmacia nella quale distribuiva gratuitamente i medicinali portati dall’Inghilterra.
Nel 1906, alla fine dei suoi pellegrinaggi in tutto il mondo, Stefano Cardini sposò Maria ed andarono ad abitare nella casa di fronte alla attuale La Ripa.

Nacque subito un bambino di nome Carlo e, nel frattempo, Stefano venne mandato in Egitto a lavorare.
Nel 1909, non volendo più lasciare sola Maria per tanto tempo, decise di imbarcarsi su una nave e di raggiungere Boston in modo da poter contattare il proprietario dell’immobile che ora è l’albergo e poterlo comprare.
Tornato dopo 4 mesi di viaggio, cominciò i lavori per la ristrutturazione, mentre nei locali si svolgeva un’altra attività, denominata “Osteria de la rama seca”, poi trasferita nell’attuale Birreria Maresciallo .
Purtroppo sul suo cammino trovò molte difficoltà: prima la morte del primogenito Carlo, deceduto nel 1918 a causa dell’influenza Spagnola , poi i vari problemi burocratici che si riscontravano anche allora.
Intanto, le camere venivano affittate ai molti turisti che in quel tempo frequentavano Baveno.
Finalmente, il 24.05.1924, riuscì ad inaugurare La Ripa e cominciò a ricevere gli ospiti che da quel giorno hanno rallegrato le camere di questa casa.
Intanto nascevano altri figli: Gaetana nel 1912, Nelly nel 1914, Giovanna, Carlo nel 1920 e Maria Adelaide.
Purtroppo il 29 dicembre 1932 Stefano morì a causa della Silicosi, malattia conseguente al suo lavoro di scalpellino.
Succedette alla gestione dell’albergo sua moglie Maria con l’aiuto delle figlie più grandi Gaetana e Nelly.
Seguirono anni molto impegnativi; per una donna con 5 figli gestire un albergo era molto gravoso ai quei tempi ma, con coraggio e devozione, riuscì a portare avanti il lavoro iniziato da Stefano.
Tante persone sono passate fra queste mura: quelle che sono rimaste più impresse nella memoria sono le Signorine Inglesi che insegnarono l’Inglese a Gaetana. Purtroppo anche loro se ne andarono a pochi mesi di distanza l’una dall’altra nel 1936. Da allora riposano nel cimitero di Baveno.
Un altro fatto segnò la vita di questa famiglia. Il 14 settembre 1943, le truppe Tedesche requisirono l’albergo ed intimarono a Maria, Gaetana e Nelly e alle altre sorelle (Carlo era andato soldato) di ritirarsi nella cucina e di non uscire se non per servirgli i pasti. Di questo fatto si può leggere nel libro Hotel Meina. Quando finalmente il Commando si ritirò, la vita a La Ripa ritornò alla normalità, fino all’agosto 1952, quando Maria se ne andò.
Prese così le redini la Figlia maggiore Gaetana aiutata da Nelly (dec. 29/03/1973), che restò alla guida dell’albergo fino al 2013 quando il giorno 8 marzo ci lasciò serenamente, quasi in punta di piedi come è sempre stata la sua vita.
Un fatto è da ricordare: il 17 Ottobre 2012, festeggiando i suoi 100 anni, volle intorno a se tutti i suoi cari Clienti. che per lei erano la Sua Famiglia. Ricordiamo fra questi: Fam. Stiegele, Fam. Le Chapelain, Fam. Portier, Fam. Hayer, Fam. Lieven, Fam. Vandeputte, Fam.Hubler. Fam. Marcucci. Solo per ricordarne alcuni che, sempre con devozione, ritornano ogni anno a farci visita.
Arriviamo così ai giorni nostri … con la speranza di aver imparato da Gaetana e dai Nonni l’arte dell’accoglienza, vi diamo il benvenuto nella nostra casa.

The Cardini family is originally from the Molino di Ripa (Shore’ Mill)(the houses between the old harbor and the river Borgo Pariani)

Carlo Cardini, born in Baveno on 28th sept 1831, married Margherita Tondina, born in Gignese on 9th Nov. 1838, and went to live in the old family house, behind the Marescialla brewery

They had 4 children – one of them was Cardini Stefano, born in Baveno on 24th Jan 1875

Stefano, a professional stonemason for the quarry Cirla, turned the world (Egypt, France, Romania, Australia, Argentina, the United States) until 1906, when he married, on 8th Oct, Diverio Maria, born in Stresa on 7th Oct 1883.

Maria had moved from Stresa to Molino di Ripa with his family as his father, Gaetano Diverio, was a carpenter (the table used as breakfast buffet is one of his creations) and had his laboratory in the house that now is the dependance of the Borella / Mascarini villa.

Before getting married, Maria worked at the Chalet delle Rose, owned by Mr Henfrey widow, whose husband had built the Villa Clara (now Villa Branca); at his death she sold the Villa to the Earl Branca, retiring in the Chalet, where she opened a pharmacy, in which she used to distribute free medicines brought from England.

In 1906, at the end of his pilgrimages around the world, Stefano married Maria; they went to live in the house opposite to the current La Ripa.

After the birth of their first child, Carlo, Stefano was sent to Egypt to work

In 1909 decided to no longer leave Maria alone for so long: he boarded a ship bound to Boston, to contact the owner of the building that is now the hotel, to buy it.

Back home after 4 months of travel, he began to restructure, while in the building another activity was taking place, the Osteria de la rama seca, (Dry Branch Tavern), later moved to the actual Marescialla brewery.

Unfortunately, he found many troubles on his way: first of all the death of his eldest son Carlo, who died in 1918 due to the Spanish influence , then the various bureaucratic problems.

Meanwhile, the rooms were rented to the many tourists frequenting Baveno at that time.

Finally, on 24th May 1924, he was able to inaugurate La Ripa and began receiving guests who, since then, have cheered the rooms of this house.

Meanwhile, more children were born: Gaetana in 1912, Nelly in 1914, Giovanna, Carlo in 1920 and Maria Adelaide.

Sadly, on 29th Dec 1932 Stefano died due to silicosis, a disease resulting in his work as a stonecutter.

His wife Maria took his place in the management of the hotel, with the help of the older daughters Gaetana and Nelly

The following years were very challenging. It was very heavy in those days for a woman with five children to run a hotel, but with courage and devotion, she managed to carry on the work begun by Stefano.

Since then, many people have spent some time within these walls: among these, the ones who have remained in the memory are the English Misses, who taught English to Gaetana. Unfortunately, they died just a few months apart from each other in 1936. They rest in Baveno Cemetery.

Another fact marked the life of this family. On 14 September 1943 the German troops commandeered the hotel and ordered Maria Gaetana and Nelly and the other sisters (Carlo had gone soldier) to retire in the kitchen and to remain closed in there, except to serve meals. This fact can be read in the book Hotel Meina. When the Commando finally retired, life in La Ripa returned to normality, until August 1952, when Maria died.

Gaetana, the eldest daughter, took her place aided by Nelly (who died on 29th march 1973), and remained at the helm of the hotel until 2013. On 8th March 2013 she left us peacefully, almost on tiptoe, as it has always been her life.

One thing is to remember: on 17th October 2012, celebrating her 100th anniversary, Gaetana wanted around her all her dear Clients who were her Family. Among these: Fam.Stiegele, Fam. Le Chapelain, Fam.Portier, Fam Hayer, Fam. Lieven, Fam Vandeputte.. just to mention a few who return each year to visit us.

That brings us to today … with the hope of having learned from Gaetana and from my Grandparents the Art of Hospitality, I welcome you into our home.
